Replace Christopher "Kit" Carson's Name on Local Park with Navajo Chief Barboncito

The Issue

As residents of Escondido, CA, we are deeply troubled by the continued glorification of a man who caused immense harm to the Navajo people. Christopher “Kit” Carson, acting under orders from the U.S. government, was responsible for the brutal killing of countless Navajo individuals and for destroying their crops. He also played a significant role in their forced removal from ancestral lands.

Our local park bears his name - a constant reminder of this painful history that is not just personal but shared by many in our community. We believe it is time to acknowledge this truth and take steps towards healing and reconciliation.

We propose replacing Carson’s name with that of Barboncito - a respected Navajo chief, orator, and ceremonial singer during those challenging times. Barboncito worked tirelessly to protect his people and sought peace with the government despite numerous adversities.

By renaming our park after Barboncito instead of Carson, we can begin to rectify historical injustices while honoring indigenous heritage and resilience. This change will serve as an important symbol for our community – one that respects all its members' histories while promoting understanding among different cultures.

We urge you to support this petition for justice, reconciliation, and respect towards Native American history in Escondido. Please sign this petition today!
