The Issue

Diagnosed as transexual at a young age, I underwent complete reassignment surgery 35 years ago to alleviate my acute dysphoria and to seamlessly integrate into society. For almost 50 years, I've been socialized as a female, a fully accepted and well-liked member of society. My business generates employment and tax revenue, and my experiences extend to helping young people and serving as a Justice of the Peace. Yet, I find myself terrified and deeply hurt, fearing the erosion of my dignity, human rights, and mental wellbeing.

Baroness Kishwer Falkner, the Chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), recently made comments suggesting that trans people advocate for facilities such as a  toilets. This statement reflects a willful bias against the equality and human rights of trans individuals and demonstrates an incapability in implementing the Supreme Court’s ruling in a manner consistent with the purpose of the Equality Act 2010.

The Equality Act 2010 was designed to prevent discrimination and to promote equality for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity. Falkner's position and sentiments suggest a misunderstanding of the law's intent to include and protect all users equally. Her stance alienates and marginalizes the transgender community, contradicting the very principles her office is supposed to safeguard.

The EHRC needs leadership that truly champions equality and human rights for every individual and is capable of implementing decisions in a fair and unbiased manner. Falkner's presence as Chair undermines trust in the EHRC's capacity to uphold these values.

Replacing Baroness Kishwer Falkner with someone more attuned to the spirit of equality and inclusivity is imperative for the EHRC to maintain its legitimacy and fulfill its mission. This change is vital not only for the transgender community but for all people who rely on the EHRC to protect their rights.
