Replace 47 Days of Horse Races with 10 More Days of the San Diego County Fair

Replace 47 Days of Horse Races with 10 More Days of the San Diego County Fair
The Issue
It's just practical business to plan an exit from U.S. Horse Racing, with Ownership entities down 46% since 2004; Trainers down 58% since 2000; Wagering down 57% since 2003 adjusted for inflation; and 50 tracks closed since 2000, 30 of them since 2013 -- 3 in California in 2024-25.
Per the Jockey Club’s 2025 Fact Book for California, from 2004 to 2024: the # of Races dropped 48.4%, Racing Starts dropped 52.1%, and Race Days dropped 50.3%.
Five horses have died so far in 9 weeks of horse races in 2025 at the Del Mar Racetrack (8 weeks in Summer, 1 week in the 4-week Fall Meet) -- four of them from Racing injuries and two in the first three days of the Fall Meet! These five deaths are among 53 reported by the California Horse Racing Board so far in 2025. No legitimate sport would tolerate these deaths of its athletes.
The 2024 San Diego County Fair provided $17.9 Million in Food and Beverage Revenues to the 22nd DAA in under 25 Fair days, or about $716K/day.
The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club provided $6.1 Million in Food and Beverage Revenues to the 22nd DAA in 2024 in 47 Race Days, or about $130K/day.
With additional daily revenues to the Fair such as Concession fees and commissions and Ticket Sales, adding 10 days to the San Diego County Fair would replace the live horse racing and put the Fairgrounds on more solid future financial footing, and stop risking and taking horses' lives for mere gambling.
