The California Horse Racing Board has reported the Racing Death of Nine-year-old Thoroughbred gelding Took Charge after he placed Last of Nine starters in Race 3 at Los Alamitos Race Course on Sunday night, described as “Non-Musculoskeletal/Other”: https://www.chrb.ca.gov/racing_fatalities_Cat2.aspx
In our experience, a Non-Musculoskeletal/Other Racing Deaths is usually Sudden Death.
March 15th’s Race 3 at Los Alamitos is listed as a “Mixed” race (not just Thoroughbreds), so the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority - HISA does NOT have jurisdiction over it and Thoroughbred Took Charge’s Racing Death will not be included in HISA’s Racing Death statistics, per California Horse Racing Board Executive Director Scott Chaney.
Took Charge is the Fifth Racehorse Death reported by the California Horse Racing Board at Los Alamitos Race Course so far in 2026 and the first Non-Musculoskeletal Death there or in #California #HorseRacing this year; and he is the 11th Racehorse Death reported by the California Horse Racing Board at the two racetracks currently operating in California in 2026, following Eight-year-old TB gelding Exhalted’s Racing Musculoskeletal Death reported on Friday at Los Alamitos.
Like all racehorses, Took Charge was trafficked among several different racetracks to supply the Horse Racing industry, including Del Mar Racetrack. No legitimate sport would tolerate the deaths of 11 of its athletes in 10 weeks of competition in just one state, California, much less 5 in only one venue, Los Alamitos Race Course.
