My name is Kaitlyn Nester and I am a student at the Regional Alternative Education (RAE) center. Like many of my peers, I attend this center because traditional school environments do not accommodate my unique educational and behavioral needs. However, instead of finding compassion and understanding, we are met with derogatory remarks and prejudice from those who should be our advocates in education.

Recently, derogatory comments were allegedly made by the Carroll County High School principal, referring to RAE students as "addicts" and "monkeys," and labeling us as "stupid." Such language is not only demeaning but perpetuates a culture of bullying and harassment that students like us face every day. Comments like these diminish our self-worth and make us feel inferior because we are different.

Numerous students and witnesses have confirmed these allegations, and yet no action has been taken to address this behavior from a person in such an influential position. It is heartbreaking to know that instead of offering support, the principal contributes to the stigma that makes it even harder for alternative education students to thrive.

This is a call to action not only for us but for anyone who believes in fairness, equality, and respect for all students regardless of their educational setting. We demand a personal and genuine apology from the Carroll County High School principal to all students impacted by these remarks. We also urge Carroll County Public Schools to provide sensitivity and inclusion training for all staff members to prevent such incidents from happening again.
