Repeal the Ordinance Prohibiting Exotic Pets from Bristol Borough Events
The Issue
Bristol Borough recently enacted an ordinance banning exotic and wild animals from public events. We’re still unsure how the borough intends to enforce the ban against wild animals, but it seems someone will need to inform the local squirrels that they are no longer welcome at Sunday Stroll. Prior to this ordinance, a variety of animals were welcome at Bristol's events. Children and families delighted in interacting with and learning about the snakes, parrots, goats, lizards, turtles, and other creatures in attendance. There are several animal rescuers who utilize the events to spread awareness for their animal rescue and rehabilitation missions. This new ordinance will negatively impact their work saving animals. Removing the animals will also undoubtedly disappoint many regular attendees.
As advocates for animals and common sense, we believe legislation should be founded on facts, not fear. Exotic pets DO NOT pose a greater risk to the public than the dogs that are still permitted to attend events. This statement is based on national statistics showing that an individual is much more likely to be attacked by a dog than an exotic pet. The new ordinance was created out of the ill-informed bias of a handful of people who have no knowledge of or experience with exotic animals. The council cites "potential safety risks" as the driving force behind this restriction, but if safety is the concern, dogs would be prohibited as well. After all, over 4.5 million Americans sustain dog bites annually.
We were unable to find any documented incidents of exotic pets causing harm during Bristol Borough events. The ordinance is unnecessary and unfairly limits the rights of responsible pet owners, and exotic pets should not be villainized by a few misinformed residents and council members. Please sign and share our petition. Thank you for your support.
