Repeal the 17th Amendment: Reclaim State Sovereignty from DC
The Issue
America's federal government has grown too powerful, too distant, and too unaccountable. Trust in Washington is at rock-bottom: according to Pew Research Center's latest 2025 survey, only 17% of Americans say they trust the federal government to do what's right "just about always" or "most of the time"—one of the lowest levels in nearly seven decades. This crisis didn't happen by accident – it was a carefully orchestrated attack on the balance of power between States and the Federal Government.
Under the banner of empowering the people, the 17th Amendment, ratified in 1913, stripped states of their constitutional voice by switching from state legislatures electing U.S. Senators to direct popular vote. The Founders designed the Senate as the States' chamber – a deliberate check on Federal overreach. Senators answered state governments, not national parties or big-money donors. This preserved the balance of power: the House represented the people directly, while the Senate represented the states as sovereign entities. In the name of giving the people more power, our States were stripped of their voice, upsetting the balance of our Republic.
Direct elections turned Senators into glorified House members – chasing national headlines, special interests, and reelection funds instead of defending state priorities. The result? Exploding federal spending, unfunded mandates crushing state budgets, and a Washington bureaucracy that ignores regional differences. We can all agree that our system is beyond corrupt with lobbyists spending a shocking $2 billion in 2024 – all to buy influence and erode your voice. So, let’s take away some of their power! By restoring States’ voices, you are taking away the influence of dark money in our Government.
Repealing the 17th Amendment isn't about taking away your vote – It's about making your state legislature (which you elect) the direct guardian of federal power. Senators would once again be accountable to state-level representatives who live in your communities, understand your economy, and feel the real impact of federal policies. This would revive federalism, force more restraint in D.C., and reduce the populist excesses and corruption that plague national campaigns. This isn’t about taking away your voice; it’s about giving one back to what are supposed to be sovereign states.
The Founders weren't wrong—they built a system to prevent centralized tyranny. James Madison said it best when he said in Federalist No 62 that “it does not appear to be without some reason that in a compound republic, partaking both of the national and federal character, the government ought to be founded on a mixture of the principles of proportional and equal representation.” We have violated that basic principle. Our government certainly has proportional representation – proportional to how much you can spend to buy their influence – but it lacks equal representation. We have allowed dark money to buy both the House and the Senate. It is beyond time to restore the voice of the State and erode the influence dark money has on our politics.
If you are sick and tired of watching DC tear the country apart with partisan BS , take the first step to fighting back. Sign this petition to demand Congress begin restoring the Constitutional system built for us by our Founders with their blood, sweat, and tears. Share it with friends, family, and even your enemies. Together, we can empower states, shrink Federal overreach, and reclaim the Republic.
