Repeal property seizure law affecting elderly and disabled

Repeal property seizure law affecting elderly and disabled
The Issue
I am an elder who is physically disabled. They come into my home and take what they want. The best of clothing, decor, food, cat toys, my supplies, my possessions, even a cat. I have a very clean house. I am not a hoarder. Most of us are not. Yet this law allows them to deem our belongings excessive and undeserved. Why should we suffer for the actions of a few?
The current law in New Hampshire permits officials to seize property from elderly and disabled individuals, under the pretext that it is excessive. This is not just absurd – it is a grave injustice. These are belongings we have worked our entire lives to accumulate. It is heartbreaking to witness years of our lives being stolen before our eyes.
The erroneous perception among some town officials and residents is that SSI/SSDI benefits are a burden on the taxpayer. This has resulted in misguided actions against the very people these benefits aim to protect. A required insurance all paid for. It is important to understand that these benefits are a necessity for many elderly and disabled individuals, meant to provide some semblance of stability and dignity in our daily lives. Taking our belongings only causes us a hardship. Because we need to continously replace the needed items. Or anything we already bought. Leaving less money for other needed items or anything we so desire.
There has to be a resolution that protects the rights and dignity of all elderly and disabled individuals, as well as those in housing, in our state. We propose a repeal of this unjust legislation, and a more thoughtful approach that differentiates between genuine hoarding issues and the rightful ownership of personal possessions. Protect our rights to live with dignity without the fear of unjust property seizures.
We urge the New Hampshire Legislature to act now by repealing this harsh and discriminatory law. Let us work together to find solutions that respect all community members, support those in need and put an end to this legalized theft.
Sign this petition to advocate for justice, compassion, and the protection of our elders disabled citizens. Help us end this inhumane practice and let our voices be heard. Most of you fall into this category. If not in the present. You will soon enough. Then you will understand the hardship and distraught it causes. Thank you for signing to protect the most vulnerable people. Your family and my family thank you.
