The Issue

Riding a bike is not just a choice for many of us in Centralia, IL; it's a necessity. Like countless others, I rely on my bicycle as my main mode of transportation. Owning and maintaining a legal vehicle is simply beyond my financial means, which is a reality shared by many citizens in our community. Our everyday lives should not be burdened with unnecessary fees and regulations imposed by Ordinance No. 25-13, which requires the registration and operation regulation of low-speed electric and gas bicycles on city streets.

The ordinance introduces a needless tax through registration fees for these low-speed bicycles, despite the fact that there is no evidence indicating that these bikes cause more accidents than regular bicycles. Enforcing such a regulation only adds an extra layer of financial strain on citizens who are already making efforts to be environmentally friendly and economically efficient.

What we need instead is the establishment of dedicated bike lanes and an ordinance mandating the use of these lanes. This solution not only addresses safety concerns but also promotes sustainable transportation. Creating bike lanes and encouraging their use can significantly improve the safety and flow of both bicycle and vehicular traffic, fostering a community that values all forms of transportation.

Now is the time to repeal Ordinance No. 25-13 and focus on building infrastructure that aligns with the needs and realities of Centralia residents. We urge the city council to prioritize the creation of a bicycle-friendly environment rather than penalizing those who opt for this mode of transportation.

Please join us in advocating for a more equitable and sensible approach by signing this petition. Together, we can enhance mobility for all and safeguard the transport methods that thousands of Centralia residents depend on.
