Repeal ordinance 21-5 on overnight parking in Dumont, NJ

Repeal ordinance 21-5 on overnight parking in Dumont, NJ
The Issue
In Dumont, New Jersey, my family of six is facing a significant parking dilemma due to ordinance 21-5, which prohibits overnight parking on the streets between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. Our family has grown, and currently, all of us drive, making our three-car driveway insufficient. We expanded it from a two-car to a three-car capacity to accommodate this need, yet parking is still a challenge. Now, with my two older children commuting to college, we are left without viable options for parking our vehicles.
This isn't just a problem limited to our household. Many residents in Dumont have expressed similar frustrations. The ordinance fails to consider households with multiple drivers and attempts to use their property most effectively. Our streets lie empty during the night when cars could safely park without inconvenience to others.
Revisiting ordinance 21-5 could provide relief to numerous families like mine while maintaining community safety and order. Many cities function efficiently without such restrictive overnight parking rules, demonstrating that alternatives can exist.
We are calling on Dumont's local government to reevaluate this ordinance and explore possible amendments. Potential solutions could include introducing a permit system allowing households to park additional cars overnight or designating specific areas for overnight parking to prevent misuse and ensure safety. Another idea would be to have no parking enforced during the day when most are at work and school.
Please join us in urging Dumont's leadership to consider the needs of its residents by signing this petition. Together, we can strive for a community-focused solution that acknowledges the evolving necessities of modern families.
