Repeal California's individual mandate for health insurance

The Issue

I am a resident of California, facing a heart-wrenching dilemma created by the state's individual mandate for health insurance. It's a law that forces me to choose between complying with the state and maintaining the roof over my head. With the exorbitant cost of housing, food, and essential needs in California, the reality is that health insurance has become an unattainable luxury.

The individual mandate requires residents to either obtain health coverage or face a financial penalty. This sounds straightforward until we consider the practicality of living in one of the most expensive states in America. The state sets arbitrary thresholds to define who qualifies for reduced rates, without taking into account the actual cost of living. For many, this means being penalized simply because their income is just above the cutoff, yet significantly insufficient to afford the high cost of health insurance.

Many Californians are in my shoes—caught in a difficult situation with no viable options. The intention behind the mandate may be to ensure everyone has access to healthcare, but for numerous residents, it results in the opposite: being devoid of both healthcare and financial security. It is financially oppressive to penalize individuals who cannot realistically afford the cost of coverage within the state's economic landscape.

According to a survey by the California Health Care Foundation, nearly one in five Californians experience difficulties paying for their health insurance. This statistic should not be surprising given that California has some of the highest living costs in the nation. The Pew Research Center also reports that California's overall cost of living is approximately 39% higher than the national average. These are not conditions under which blanket policies, like the individual mandate, should operate without reconsideration and revision.

By repealing the individual mandate, or at least reassessing its criteria, California can pave the way toward a more just and realistic healthcare framework that considers the true cost of living. The solution lies in creating subsidies that are sensitive to local economic realities, modifying penalties based on actual ability to pay, or providing more comprehensive support for those caught in similar predicaments.

I urge lawmakers to listen to us and take action. Our state should be a place where no one has to choose between healthcare and basic survival. Sign this petition to advocate for the repeal of California's individual mandate for health insurance and join the fight for pragmatic, inclusive, and fair healthcare solutions.
