The Issue

In the greater "Redland" agricultural areas and other sections adjacent to the Urban Development Boundary (UDB), we face serious challenges every day due to the poor condition of our public roads. These dilapidated roads have become more than just a nuisance; they are a looming danger, particularly in the rainy season when they deteriorate rapidly, with potholes multiplying and filling up with rainwater. This makes them all the more difficult to see and avoid, leading to costly damage to our vehicles and farm equipment.

For many farmers and residents, traveling these roads is becoming increasingly hazardous. Vehicles get damaged, farm equipment suffers, and the potential for accidents escalates dramatically. It’s not limited to the local populace, either. Urban residents, visiting our farms and enjoying the agritourism offerings, also face significant risks when navigating these treacherous paths.

Despite being crucial to our daily lives and local economy, these roads have suffered decades of neglect. They require immediate attention to prevent further risks and financial burdens on our community.

We are calling on local government officials and relevant authorities to prioritize the repair and resurfacing of these roads. Investing in road maintenance not only keeps our community safe but also supports local businesses and tourism, ensuring a thriving future for the Redland agricultural areas.

In addition, residents are calling for a permanent policy solution to prevent future neglect:

  1. A dedicated road maintenance fund shall be established by county ordinance, with revenues from designated tax sources separated from the general fund and restricted exclusively for road repair and resurfacing.
  2. The ordinance will require consistent funding contributions to cover projected maintenance needs and to build a reserve for future resurfacing. Any funding shortfalls must be supplemented by the county’s general fund.
  3. To address current deficiencies, the ordinance will mandate that funds from sources including (but not limited to) commissioner discretionary funds, public works allocations, and gas tax revenues be directed toward existing unfunded road repairs. These funds must be allocated within six (6) months of enactment, with repairs completed within twelve (12) months.
  4. The Department of Public Works and Transportation shall be required to conduct ongoing monitoring of road conditions and complete necessary repairs within fourteen (14) days of identification. Additional emphasis shall be placed on pre-rainy season preparation to mitigate seasonal damage.

Your support and signature can make a compelling case to the authorities, demanding action to restore the safety and functionality of our vital roadways. Please sign and share this petition to drive change for our community.
