Reopen the University of Nebraska Omaha Child Care Center
The Issue
As a student at the University of Nebraska Omaha, I have experienced the challenges of balancing academic responsibilities with parenting. Our university once offered a daycare facility that served as a crucial support system for students, staff, and the broader community. Its closure has left many of us struggling to find affordable and reliable childcare options.
The on-campus daycare was more than just a convenience; it was a necessity. It enabled many parents like myself to attend classes, participate in research, and engage in campus activities, knowing that our children were in a safe and nurturing environment close by. The loss of this resource has made it difficult for many to continue their education or work effectively, directly impacting our academic performance and overall well-being.
We are urging the University of Nebraska Omaha to reconsider the closure of the center, explain why closure was necessary rather than restructuring the center, and explain what was done to try and prevent the closure. While there were reasons given for the closure, there is still confusion within the community about the decision to close. There were parents who were on a waitlist for the center and others who weren’t informed it was a resource available. We as a community want to work with the university to make this resource available again.
Reopening the daycare would demonstrate the University of Nebraska Omaha’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive educational environment and giving back to the Omaha community. It would alleviate stress for parents, enhance the university's appeal to prospective students, and support the mental health and academic success of its current students and staff.
We urge the university administration to prioritize and reinstate the daycare facility. This action will not only support current students and staff but also attract future talent who seek a supportive and family-friendly academic environment.
