Reopen the Sloss House
Reopen the Sloss House
The Issue
The Margaret Sloss Center for Women and Gender Equity is ISU history. Founded in 1981, its mission is to advance the social and academic well-being of women and underserved populations on campus.
The Sloss House has been closed all semester with no plan to reopen.
While the repairs are necessary, Iowa State has provided no communication or transparency on when it will be back open and how the valuable resources it provided will be supplemented during the closure.
The Sloss Resource Room was a satellite location of the SHOP, offering shelf-stable food items, parenting supplies, and personal care items. Importantly, the SHOP does not carry parenting supplies and is only available to ISU students. The Resource Room filled these gaps.
Their partnerships with other campus resources provided support to sexual assault victims, immigrants, families, and more.
There has been no communication how Sloss House's resources and programming will be supplemented during its closure.
During a time of discussion about institutional lack of support for women, we demand Iowa State to make their commitment to women and gender equality clear. We call for Iowa State to:
Make publicly available a comprehensive plan stating the future of the Sloss House
Provide an anticipated timeline for repairs
State how they plan on providing resources and programming while the Sloss House is closed
Women and marginalized identities at Iowa State deserve clear communication and transparency regarding resources on campus.
Support women. Support our resources. Reopen the Sloss House.
