Reopen NC House Bill 999 And Save Our Students

Reopen NC House Bill 999 And Save Our Students
The Issue
We are campaigning to gather public support for the life saving drug naloxone to be present in every public North Carolina High School. Its presence onsite in the event of an overdose can be the difference between life and death. Naloxone has the power to reverse overdoses from opioids and is critical to administer as fast as possible in the event of an overdose. We are also advocating for trained personnel to be present at all times on school premises during school hours and during sponsored school events.
Currently, Naloxone is stocked in 32 districts, but we believe these efforts cannot cease until it is stocked in EVERY district in North Carolina (Fentanyl Victims Network). There are eight states as of the end of 2023 which currently mandate the presence of Naloxone in all public high schools and at school sponsored events (Legislative Analysis and Public Policy Association). It is time for North Carolina to join their ranks and protect our children.
Notably, this is not a new effort. Stalled House Bill 999 attempted to make this law, as did Senate Bill 801, and the Fentanyl Victims Network of North Carolina has tirelessly campaigned for this effort. Yet this is still not law across the state of North Carolina, so we are calling fellow citizens to action to amplify their voices so we cannot be ignored. Our state’s response to the fentanyl crisis has kept us ahead of the curve, and we must continue to push forward and establish good, sound public policy that keeps our children and community safe among the growing opioid and fentanyl crisis in our country. Help us petition governor Josh Stein to use his executive power to mandate the presence of naloxone and trained personnel to administer it in all public high schools and school events at all times.
Creating a North Carolina that is safe, proactive with its resources, and ahead of the curve in the Fentanyl crisis should be on the forefront of all our legislators and citizens minds. Help us lead NC to be a beacon of hope, and a shining example on how to better equip and protect its citizens and children against this tragic reality. This matter is extremely urgent, and each day of inaction leaves more families in devastation. It is our responsibility to use our voices to usher the change we wish to see, and let our lawmakers know how our communities can best be served. With this petition, we hope to push a new emphasis on protecting children, vulnerable populations, and victims. And create a stronger, united NC in which no parent, sibling, or friend, has to fear losing a loved one to such a preventable crisis.
