The Issue

Cornwall residents are in urgent need of an accessible hydrotherapy pool. Unfortunately, the hydrotherapy provision at Polkyth Leisure Center in St Austell was closed during the first COVID-19 lockdown and has yet to reopen. This closure has left many in the community without an essential facility that greatly benefits their physical and mental well-being.

Hydrotherapy pools are known for their therapeutic benefits, providing a unique environment for rehabilitation, pain relief, and improving mobility for individuals with chronic conditions, disabilities, and those undergoing post-surgical recovery. Without access to a local facility, many residents are missing out on these vital therapeutic advantages, impacting their quality of life significantly.

In response to this closure, our small community group has been actively working towards getting the facility reopened. We have developed a  business plan demonstrating the viability of reopening the pool. Additionally, a survey conducted over several weeks has revealed that hundreds of locals are eager to use the pool not only for therapeutic reasons but also for general health and leisure purposes.

Restoring the hydrotherapy provision would cater to a wide variety of residents, supporting not only those with health conditions but also parents with young children, the elderly, and individuals seeking a low-impact way to stay active. Reopening the pool would bolster community well-being, encourage healthy lifestyles, and foster social interaction among residents.

We urge local authorities and relevant stakeholders to consider our proposal to reopen the hydrotherapy pool at Polkyth Leisure Center. By signing this petition, you are supporting a cause that prioritizes health, accessibility, and community cohesion. Let's come together to ensure Cornwall residents have the resources they deserve to lead healthier, happier lives.

Please sign this petition to advocate for the reopening of the hydrotherapy pool in St Austell and revive this critical community asset.

This petition will be presented to Cornwall Council, at least 5000 signatures are needed to make a full council debate happen.
