Reopen Boggo Road Gaol (Jail) - Tours

Reopen Boggo Road Gaol (Jail) - Tours
The issue
Historic Boggo Road Gaol (Jail) is currently closed due to a development next to the prison.
We are calling on the State Government to fast-track and commit to a reopening date for Boggo Road Gaol for this unique, local heritage tourism-operation – so we can start planning for the future - such as establishing an official Boggo Road Gaol Museum displaying historic artifacts donated by the public.
The release of Netflix Boy Swallows Universe based on the best-selling book by Trent Dalton has generated enormous publicity world-wide.
We need to get the Gaol reopened for our history tours and re-enactments, film making, school and universities, locals, interstate and overseas tourists including cruise ships. We have already laid the groundwork - Boggo Road Gaol can become a major heritage tourism attraction for Brisbane and Queensland.
The situation where there is no reopening date is untenable.
BACKGROUND
Boggo Road Gaol Pty Ltd – managed by passionate local Brisbane identity Jack Sim - won a Best of Queensland and Tripadvisor Awards in 2017, 2018, 2019. Jack Sim also operates Historic Australia, Ghost Tours Australia and Crime Tours Australia – including tours of Toowong Cemetery and the Venus Gold Battery Experience in north Queensland.
Jack and his team - including former prisoners and officers – have been involved with the prison for more than 25 years running guided tours, historic re-enactments, functions and events, prison movie screenings, community events and fund-raising, film and documentary production, and publishing books including History of Boggo Road Gaol and Slim Halliday the Taxi Driver Killer by Ken Blanch.
The official website for the prison is: boggoroadgaol.com
The Youtube channel is: BoggoRoadGaol
In March 2022 the operation was forced to close due to a development next to the prison. Coming straight after Covid, and with the Olympics on the horizon this has been greatly impacting.
Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton is set in Queensland in the 1980s. It is centred around a young lad and the criminal characters who populate his life. Boggo Road Gaol features in the story, with legendary Australian actor Bryan Brown playing Slim Halliday Boggo Road Gaol’s infamous escape artist.
