Yesterday friends and family of Wayne Weaver gathered to say goodbye to him. For many visitors to Boggo Road Gaol Wayne and his friend “Itchy” represented the story of prisoners. They were the faces of the Prisoner Tours we took to the historic prison, currently closed with no reopening date.
Keith Hamburger and Debbie Kilroy – each had deep connections to Boggo Road Gaol – shared moving memories of Wayne and his unsung role in advocacy for prisoners. Wayne changed many people's lives - inside and outside.
People who served time in or worked at Boggo Road Gaol are growing older. They have a wealth of experience and stories to share. There is a finite time that the public will be able to meet former prisoners and officers and hear what this prison was like from their mouths. The Gaol needs to reopen before these connections are gone.
Wayne will live on through the Wayne Weaver Foundation. Thank you to everyone who has donated, and for the hundreds of messages and memories left on the official Boggo Road Gaol Facebook page.
We still need your support while the Gaol is closed - over these holidays please consider booking our other tours & experiences at historicaustralia.com.au / crimetoursaustralia.com.au / ghosttoursaustralia.com.au
