Justice for Alika: Reopen His Case and Conduct an Independent Investigation

My name is Shawna Koa, and I am the mother of Alika Keanu Koa “Izan” Koa, who was only 21 years old when he died on September 20, 2021.

For nearly five years, I have been fighting for answers about what happened to my son.

Alika’s manner of death was classified as undetermined, yet his case was closed. I believe there are serious unanswered questions surrounding his death and the investigation that followed.

I am asking for something very simple:

Please investigate my son’s death thoroughly, independently, and fairly.

There are significant issues that I believe deserve further investigation, including:

The homicide response being called off before a full homicide investigation was conducted.
Questions surrounding potential conflicts of interest.
Witnesses and individuals connected to Alika who I believe need to be fully interviewed or re-interviewed.
Missing or incomplete investigative information that I have spent years trying to obtain.
Questions concerning body-worn camera footage, 911 communications, phone records, and other evidence.
Serious concerns regarding the documentation of Alika’s autopsy, including limited internal photographs and the absence of an estimated time of death.
An independent forensic pathology review that recommended a criminal investigation.
Yet Alika’s case remains closed.

What I Am Asking For

I am asking the appropriate authorities to:

REOPEN ALIKA’S CASE.

Conduct a full and independent criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Review the decision to call off the homicide response.

Review any potential conflicts of interest.

Interview or re-interview all relevant witnesses.

Review all available evidence, records, communications, photographs, body-camera footage, 911 information, and other evidence that can lawfully be obtained.

Give appropriate consideration to the independent forensic review recommending a criminal investigation.

And give our family a transparent accounting of what was investigated, what was not investigated, and why.

I am not asking the public to decide who is guilty.

I am asking investigators to do the work necessary to determine the truth.

Alika was 21 years old. He had his entire future ahead of him.

He was a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend. He was loved, and his life mattered.

Every year that passes makes finding the truth more difficult. Evidence can disappear. Memories fade. Witnesses may become unavailable.

We cannot keep waiting.

Alika’s life mattered! He was murdered and deserves justice! Every day without answers is a day that adds to the heartache and suffering for Alika's family and loved ones. Despite the overwhelming evidence pointing towards foul play, Alika's case has remained unsolved, leaving an unbearable void in our lives. The pain of losing him is compounded by the failure to hold anyone accountable for his untimely death.

We have reason to believe that the medical examiner who allegedly performed Alika's autopsy failed to follow standard procedures and maintain the integrity of the investigation. Such negligence only perpetuates the cycle of violence by denying closure to grieving families and leaving crimes unresolved.

The demand for justice goes beyond personal grievance; it is a call to restore faith in our legal system. It is imperative to reopen Alika's case with a fresh perspective, thoroughly re-assess all evidences, and investigate the medical examiner's conduct.
