The Rent is Outrageously High for Too Many Texans!

It’s time we do something. Texas is suffering from a housing shortage of massive proportions, driving out our teachers, firefighters and nurses: Almost half of Texans are housing insecure— spending more than 30% of their income on housing per month.

A key part of the Texas Miracle is ensuring our  workforce can afford to raise a family and live comfortably. Yet, Texans are increasingly concerned about their ability to afford to live in the state: In a Texas Lyceum Poll in March 2022, 40% of respondents said their opportunities for home ownership are either “poor” or “terrible.” Moreover, 50% of Texans surveyed agreed with the statement: “I spend too much of my income on housing.”

Urge our state leadership to remedy our housing affordability crisis in the following ways: 1) Incentivize local government to increase more housing supply to accommodate our workforce; 2) Grant Texans their property rights to build housing for another family or person on one’s own property; 3) Re-examine outdated laws and their effect on affordability; and 4) Reduce time delays that drive up housing costs.
