Growing up in cousins in Centreville, Virginia, I always enjoyed going to games, performances, and visiting CVHS. The school was not just a place for education, but a cherished space fostering growth and blazing pathways to future opportunities. However, the recent news story that highlighted our school’s deteriorating state has been a heartbreaking eye-opener.

The coverage showed broken sinks, aging infrastructure, and facilities that can hardly accommodate the current student population. This is not the environment our students deserve. With over 2,500 students attending Centreville High, it is crucial that the learning environment is safe, modern, and capable of engaging young minds.

Education plays a vital role in shaping the future of our society. How can we expect our children to excel without providing them with the adequate tools and spaces that inspire academic excellence and personal growth? A neglected school building sends a damaging message: that our children are not a priority.

Statistics show that students perform significantly better in facilities that are well-maintained and properly equipped. Recent studies have revealed that inadequate school facilities lower student achievement by as much as 17%.
