Rename Walnut Street Bridge to the Ed Johnson Memorial Bridge

The Issue

As someone deeply concerned about promoting positive reconciliation and extending due recognition to figures instrumental in shaping America's civil rights movement, the memory of Ed Johnson resonates strongly with me. Ed Johnson, a man of color, was unjustly lynched by a mob—including the sheriff—in 1906. This occurred on the Walnut Street Bridge in Chattanooga, a bridge that remains a testament to a harsh and unjust period in our history.

Renaming the Walnut Street Bridge to the Ed Johnson Memorial Bridge would serve multiple noble purposes. It would accompany the Memorial and ensure history remains alive in our public memory and provide a poignant reminder of a past we strive not to repeat. It would pay tribute to Johnson's life and commemorate the civil rights struggle that his unjust death symbolized—paving the way for other historically significant racial justice cases to the Supreme Court. Renaming the bridge would also highlight the progress we've made as a nation since Johnson's wrongful execution, underlining our transition from an era of discrimination to a time where we value and champion equality for all.

While this dark chapter of lynching is an uncomfortable reminder of our past, we must remember it in order to build a more equitable future. Let's ensure that our city’s infrastructure promotes healing and solidarity rather than perpetuating historical trauma.

Change should start now.

Let's honor Ed Johnson's legacy by renaming the Walnut Street Bridge as the Ed Johnson Memorial Bridge. Sign the petition now. Let's demand acknowledgement and respect for our shared past and an inclusively forged future.
