As passionate residents of Columbus, GA, and a devoted lovers of our local baseball, the recent naming of our new team as "The Columbus Clingstones" brings disappointment and concern. This isn’t about being resistant to change, but about the importance of a name that carries weight, brings a smile or has local relevance.

The remarkable and exciting history of baseball team names has generally fallen into three categories: some inspire strength with their powerful undertones like the Braves, Rays, and Marlins, some spread joy with their humorous titles like Macon Bacon, Montgomery Biscuits, Huntsville Trash Pandas, and others possess a local tie like the Fish, River, Rapids, or Fountains. However, 'Clingstones' don't fit into any of these categories and thus, it fails to do justice to the spirit and pride of our local baseball scene.

The essence of a good team name can ignite spirit, foster camaraderie and ground us in our local pride. The name Clingstones lacks not only these qualities but also an essential connection to Columbus’s vibrant history and culture. We are sure that our community can think of a name that does just that, and that will reverberate with our spirit and pride.
