Rename Stonington field to honor Sandra Logan

Rename Stonington field to honor Sandra Logan
The Issue
For many, baseball is just a game. But for Sandra Logan, it was a test of courage, resilience, and determination.
Sandra Logan is my aunt, and my family has long shared the story of how she became the first girl (and only at that time) to play in the Stonington Little League boys’ baseball league at a time when girls were not welcomed. While a girls’ softball league was just beginning, Sandra stood alone. She was singled out for her ability and placed in the boys’ league, where she faced harassment and hostility from both adults and players. Despite that, she showed up, she persevered, and she played!
Her impact did not end there. Sandra continued to give back to this community for many years as a team sponsor, supporting the very complex where she once broke barriers.
Today, there is not a single field or pavilion at the Stonington Little League Complex named after a woman. Every space is named in honor of a man. That absence matters. As a woman who once played in this complex and as a mother of a daughter who plays there now, I can’t ignore the message that sends—that women’s contributions are not worthy of the same recognition.
We fully support honoring ALL of the girls who were part of that early era of softball, and we believe they should absolutely be recognized with a permanent plaque displayed at the field. They were pioneers in their own right.
But Sandra’s experience was different.
She did not enter a league with her peers—she stood alone in a boys’ league, facing challenges no one else in that moment had to endure. She broke a barrier that had not yet been broken, and that deserves individual recognition.
We are calling on the Stonington Little League Board to rename the final unnamed field the “Sandra Logan Field,” and to install a plaque honoring all of the girls who were part of the softball league at that time.
This approach ensures that no one is left out—while still honoring the individual who made that first, difficult step forward.
Let us come together as a community to recognize courage, correct an imbalance, and ensure that future generations of girls can see themselves reflected in the history of this field.
