The Issue

The Rome City School District holds cherished memories for many students, teachers, and community members. Today, we have the opportunity to honor one of its most inspiring souls—Ayla Sharmay Griffiths, affectionately known as "Ay." Ayla was a beloved student at Stokes Elementary School who touched the lives of everyone around her with her kindness, intelligence, and perseverance.

Ayla's journey was one of incredible strength and courage. She was diagnosed with primary refractory Hodgkin's Lymphoma in August 2007, and she bravely fought this relentless disease until her passing on February 22, 2010. Despite her battles, Ayla remained an honor student and found her passion in school activities such as soccer, orchestra, and band, within the walls of Stokes. Her vibrant spirit and dedication to learning left a lasting imprint at Stokes Elementary.

Renaming the gymnasium at Stokes Elementary School in honor of Ayla would serve as a permanent reminder of her enduring legacy. It would inspire current and future students to embrace life with bravery, resilience, and compassion, just as Ayla did.

We are calling upon the Rome City School District to take this meaningful step for a remarkable former student who embodied what it means to be an Eagle. By renaming the gymnasium at Stokes Elementary to "Ayla Sharmay Griffiths Gymnasium," we can ensure her memory remains alive in the hearts of all who pass through its doors.

Please join us in this effort to honor Ayla by signing this petition. Let us work together to commemorate a life that continues to inspire and uplift our school community.
