Written by WA historian Jeremy Martens, this article argues that governor James Stirling played a significant role in the conquest of the Avon Valley. Archival evidence indicates that Stirling ordered and encouraged British army officers, civil officials and settlers to employ extreme measures to tranquilize the fertile region of the York area. This led to illegal and extrajudicial violence and even murder of First Nations Balllardong people, the perpertrators would never be held accountable.
As we march quickly through the months of 2026 there is no better time for The City of Albany to consider renaming Stirling Terrace to a more worthy noteation that reflects the streets important connection to shipping, trade, early tourism, transportation, commerce, emmigration & immigration.
