In this update I showcase the efforts of students, staff and school community of Mosman Park Primary School (MPPS) in Perth, Western Australia.
Please take a little time out of your day to read the article attached above.
The catalyst for change at MPPS came from a letter written by a student who proposed that their school faction of 'Stirling' be renamed. Using a whole of school approach with Indigenous consultation MPPS developed a new school logo, refreshed the sports faction symbols and chose 'Balbuk Bibjool' to replace the colonial standard naming.
‘We’re changing a lot of the way we do things, because it’s important to us that we incorporate the full history of our school.’
The school truly embraced the opportunity to acknowledge the past and make meaningful changes in partnership with the community. In the process the whole school community got involved with reconciliation and truth-telling.
This is a powerful example of how a school community created change through collaboration and there is no reason why the City of Albany could not follow in the footsteps of the students of MPPS.
