The Issue

As a fan of Dolly Parton, if there is even talk about renaming BNA, I passionately propose the renaming of the Nashville (BNA) airport to Dolly Parton International Airport after the greatest Tennessean of all time. It is more than just a change of name; it is an acknowledgment of Parton's tremendous impact and influence in our community and the world from her music career to her educational impact through her Imagination Library to her philanthropic efforts in helping build economy in Gatlinburng and PIgeon Forge and her generous giving during ecological disasters like the wild fires in Gatlinburg in 2016. Born in rural Tennessee, Dolly Parton rose to become a world-renowned singer, songwriter, and actress. She has sold over 100 million records worldwide, securing her place as one of the best-selling music artists of all time (source: RIAA). Beyond her undisputed musical talents, Parton's philanthropy work makes her a genuine hero. Known for her literacy program, "Dolly Parton's Imagination Library," which mails free books to children from birth until they start school, Parton has fostered a generation of book enthusiasts. Through the Dollywood Foundation, she contributed $1,000 per month to each family affected by the 2016 Tennessee wildfires (source: NPR). This kind of commitment to her homeland epitomizes the values we Tennesseans hold dear and set an example for others to follow. The renaming of the Nashville airport in her honor would be a fitting tribute and a constant reminder of the footprints she has left not only in Tennessee but in the hearts of millions around the world. I'm proud to sponsor a resolution asking the Metro Nashville Airport Authority to consider renaming BNA to Dolly Parton International Airport. Dolly Parton isn't just a country music icon; she's a global ambassador for our city, our state, and everything we love about Tennessee. From her philanthropic work through the Dollywood Foundation and Imagination Library, to putting Nashville on the map for millions of visitors around the world, few people have done more to define what this city means to the rest of the world. Renaming BNA in her honor would be a fitting tribute to someone whose generosity and hometown pride have never wavered. I want to be clear about what this resolution does and doesn't do: it's a statement of support from Metro Council, urging MNAA to take up the idea. The final decision on any name change rests with the Airport Authority, not with Council. I hope that this resolution sends a strong signal of how much our community would welcome this change, and that MNAA will give it serious consideration. Warmest Regards, Russ Bradford [Note: The Change.org Civic Engagement Team reaches out to decision makers to let them know about petitions in their community and to help facilitate engagement with supporters.
