The Issue

On December 30, 2025, our community was shattered by the loss of Alec Chambers, a dear friend to many, a former professional skateboarder, and a cherished local figure, who was taken from us too soon by a tragic accident involving a drunk driver. Alec was only 31 years old, with so much more life to live and dreams to fulfill. His kindness inspired all who had the privilege to know him.

We are petitioning the City of Wilmington, NC Parks and Recreation Department to rename Greenfield Grind Skate Park to Alec Chambers Skate Park in honor of Alec’s lasting impact. Renaming the skate park would serve as an enduring testament to Alec’s contributions and a daily reminder of the positive influence he had in our lives and on generations of skateboarders.

Greenfield Grind Skate Park holds significant memories for Alec, as it was a place where he spent countless hours refining his skills and building friendships. It is only fitting that his legacy lives on in a place that symbolizes his passion and dedication. Such a change not only acknowledges Alec's personal achievements and contributions but also raises awareness about the dangers of drunk driving and the importance of community support.

Please sign this petition to help us honor Alec Chambers in the way that truly reflects the profound love he had for skateboarding and his community.

City Councilman David Joyner here. Wilmington City Council’s facilities naming committee met this morning, Mon. March 23, 2026. The committee voted unanimously to move the recommendation forward to rename the skate park in Alec’s memory. We anticipate that the recommendation will be heard by the full City Council at our first meeting in April for final approval.
