Rename Fort Liberty to Medal of Honor Recipient MSG Roy Benavidez

The Issue

Fort Bragg, previously known as Fort Liberty, located in North Carolina, boasts an extensive and illustrious history of dedication from the bravest individuals our nation has ever witnessed. It is my sincere belief that this military stronghold should bear the name of a person who embodies the very essence of those who selflessly sacrificed everything to safeguard our homeland.

Because I believe that those that serve/served at Fort Bragg/Fort Liberty deserve better , I am initiating a petition to change the name of "Fort Liberty" to "Fort Roy Benavidez" in honor of MSG Roy Benavidez, a recipient of the Vietnam Era Medal of Honor.

Roy Benavides was a highly distinguished and heroic individual, renowned for his unparalleled courage and selflessness. He was a recipient of the Medal of Honor, the highest and most prestigious military decoration awarded by the United States government. His actions during the Vietnam War demonstrated extraordinary bravery and an unwavering commitment to his fellow soldiers. Which epitomize the grit and determination of many of those assigned to the previously named Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Roy Benavides was born in 1935 in Texas, and he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1955. Throughout his military career, he proved to be an exceptional soldier, serving with the elite Special Forces unit, also known as the Green Berets.

On May 2, 1968, during the Vietnam War, Benavides's heroic actions took place during a harrowing and intense battle in the infamous Song Ve Valley. His Special Forces team came under heavy enemy fire and was significantly outnumbered and outgunned. Despite being severely wounded early in the battle, Benavides refused to be evacuated and continued to lead his team with exceptional determination.

Under intense enemy fire, he repeatedly risked his life to rescue wounded comrades, displaying immense courage and resilience. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds, grenade shrapnel, and a grievous bayonet injury during the course of the battle but remained steadfast in his mission to save his fellow soldiers.

For nearly six hours, Benavides fought relentlessly, coordinating the evacuation of the wounded and providing cover for helicopter extraction. His actions were instrumental in saving the lives of at least eight of his fellow soldiers. Roy was carted off the battlefield in a body bag and if he hadn't coughed in the face of a doctor that was examining his lifeless body he would not have made it home alive!

In recognition of his extraordinary heroism, Roy Benavides was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Ronald Reagan on February 24, 1981. His citation for the award praised his "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty."

Roy Benavides's unwavering dedication to his comrades and his extraordinary acts of valor exemplify the highest ideals of military service. He stands as an inspiring example of selflessness, bravery, and sacrifice, forever etched in the annals of American military history.

Do the right thing! Name this storied North Carolina military base with the name of a revered Medal Of Honor Soldier that represents the core values and character traits of those service members that show up to give their all everyday! Like Roy did on that faithful day.
