The Issue

Fifth Avenue, located in the heart of Manhattan, is one of New York City’s most famous streets and one of the most recognizable thoroughfares in the world. Known for its historic significance, world-renowned landmarks, and role as a symbol of American culture and commerce, Fifth Avenue holds exceptional social and cultural importance.

To honor the legacy of Barack Obama, the first Black President of the United States, it is fitting to consider renaming Fifth Avenue as Barack Obama Avenue. President Obama’s leadership emphasized progress, inclusion, and global engagement, values that closely align with New York City’s identity as a diverse, international city.

Renaming Fifth Avenue would serve as a lasting public tribute to President Obama’s impact on American history. During his administration, the United States enacted major healthcare reform, supported the recovery of the American auto industry, and advanced federal efforts to address climate change. His presidency also emphasized education, civil rights, and the strengthening of democratic institutions.

President Obama played a key role in advancing international diplomacy, including U.S. participation in the Paris Agreement, reinforcing America’s role in global cooperation. These priorities reflect New York City’s longstanding commitment to international dialogue, equity, and opportunity for all residents.

Cities across the country, including Chicago, have honored President Obama through street namings and public designations. New York City, home to some of the nation’s most influential cultural and historical landmarks, should consider joining in recognizing his legacy in a similarly meaningful way.

We urge New York City officials to consider this proposal. Renaming Fifth Avenue as Barack Obama Avenue would create a visible, enduring acknowledgment of a leader whose presidency inspired millions and whose legacy continues to shape the nation.

By signing this petition, you support honoring a historic figure and celebrating values of progress, inclusion, and civic leadership on one of the world’s most iconic streets.
