The Issue

Growing up, Cesar Chavez was a figure I deeply admired and looked up to. His dedication to labor rights seemed unparalleled, representing a beacon of hope and change for many. However, recent revelations have forced me to reevaluate his legacy. As more details surface, it's become clear that the adoration surrounding him obscured some troubling actions that need to be acknowledged and addressed. In this light, I firmly believe it's time to shift our city's homage from Chavez to a figure who embodies true bravery and integrity: Dolores Huerta.

Dolores Huerta has long stood as a pioneering force in labor rights, advocating tirelessly for those without a voice in the battle for fair treatment and equality. Beyond her tangible contributions to the labor movement, Huerta's courage to call out injustices, even when it means holding admired figures accountable, showcases her unwavering commitment to truth and justice.

Renaming East Cesar Chavez Dr. to Dolores Huerta Blvd. isn't just a symbolic act; it's a powerful statement of alignment with values that truly matter – equality, integrity, and courage. In doing so, we acknowledge the vital role Huerta has played in shaping not just our city, but our nation, prompting us to reflect on what we memorialize and why.

East Austin, with its rich history and vibrant, diverse community, deserves to highlight a legacy that resonates with the ongoing struggle for human rights and justice. Dolores Huerta’s contributions have often been overshadowed, and it's time these are brought to the forefront.

Join me in honoring Dolores Huerta by advocating for this change in Austin, TX. Sign this petition to ensure our city sincerely represents values we can stand behind and proudly endorse for future generations. ¡Viva Dolores Huerta Blvd.!

I want to share my solidarity with Dolores Huerta and the other victims of these horrid actions, and honor their strength to speak about the abuse they endured. Austin should continue celebrate the farmworkers movement and organizer heroes like Dolores Huerta who made so much possible. As to this street’s name, I will support the demands of organizations like El Concilio who carry the spirit of the United Farmworkers movement today.
