Rename Avenida Cesar Chavez to Avenida Dolores Huerta
Rename Avenida Cesar Chavez to Avenida Dolores Huerta
The Issue
Albuquerque has already taken meaningful steps to recognize Dolores Huerta’s pivotal role in the Farm Workers’ Movement and her legacy in advancing civil rights for laborers across all sectors. In 2019, a portion of Bridge Boulevard in the South Valley was renamed Avenida Dolores Huerta. That decision reflected a commitment to honoring her impact.
We are asking the City of Albuquerque to build on that foundation and take the next step: to fully honor Dolores Huerta by renaming Avenida Cesar Chavez.
Dolores Huerta, born in New Mexico, led negotiations, organized workers, and helped secure labor protections that changed lives across America. Her leadership was foundational, not supplemental, to the movement’s success and continues to influence generations of advocates today.
At 96 years old, she is still using her voice to speak truth, reminding us that it can take a lifetime to be heard.
With Huerta now speaking more openly about her experiences and leadership within the movement, many are taking a deeper look at how we honor history and whose stories are centered in our public spaces. This renaming is not about erasing history. It is about ensuring our public spaces reflect the full story and the values we carry forward.
Albuquerque has the opportunity to continue leading with integrity by recognizing Dolores Huerta’s enduring impact and standing with those who bravely choose to use their voice.
¡Sí, se puede!
