I am writing this petition not just for me, but for my son and step-daughter. Precious, vibrant lives taken too soon on the streets of Oakland, CA. Their laughter, love, and dreams curtailed right at 105th and Est Street. To honor their untimely departure, I seek your help to change this street's name to Devonya and Alayasia Thurston Avenue. This small, symbolic act can keep their memory alive and serve as a constant reminder that we need to better protect our youth from violent incidents. Unfortunately, Oakland has seen a dramatic increase in homicide rates, with a 314% surge as of April 2021, according to the Oakland Police Department. My son and step-daughter are not just numbers in this grim statistic, but lives full of promise.
