The issue

As a young individual in Australia, YouTube plays a significant role in my education and entertainment. It’s disheartening to think that just because I am under 16, a future ban might take away a platform that has been incredibly beneficial to my learning journey and leisure time. Youtube is not just another social media site; it's a repository of knowledge, creativity, and entertainment that’s accessible to all ages. It's unfair to limit such a platform to adults, especially when they themselves enjoy its benefits.

Many minors are using YouTube educationally, engaging with content that supports school curricula, developing new skills, and broadening their perspectives on global issues. Content like science experiments, history documentaries, language lessons, and even educational animations can make learning exciting and engaging in a way textbooks sometimes cannot. Why should such a resource be stripped from our fingertips simply because of our age?

Furthermore, the argument that adults cannot manage their children's screen time issues should not lead to the collective punishment of young individuals seeking knowledge and entertainment. It is critical to promote responsible digital usage, but banning YouTube for those under 16 vilifies a platform that, when used responsibly, can be an amazing tool for growth.

Targeting YouTube seems unreasonable, especially when adults consume and validate its content for both education and entertainment alike. Instead of imposing blanket restrictions, more tailored solutions should be sought. For instance, introducing stricter parental controls, encouraging digital literacy, and promoting screen time management can achieve the goal of responsible use without a total ban.

Moreover, there remains a plethora of content creators who primarily serve on YouTube to entertain younger viewers with family-friendly, fun, engaging yet educational content.

The ban is justified for social media sites such as FaceBook, Insta, X / Twitter and Snapchat; however for YouTube, the limit has been pushed too intensely. Younger audiences could easily start hating the government.

I urge policy makers to reconsider this approach and remove YouTube from the proposed under-16 social media ban in Australia. We should focus on empowering young users through education, awareness, and parent-teen collaboration rather than broad prohibitions.

Please sign this petition to support young Australians in retaining access to YouTube as a valuable educational and entertainment resource.
