Remove Yonder Pouches at College Park High School

Remove Yonder Pouches at College Park High School
The Issue
College Park High School is my school, and it's a place where every student should have the opportunity to learn and grow without unnecessary hurdles. Recently, our school has introduced Yonder pouches as a measure to limit phone use during school hours. While the intention might be good, the reality is that these pouches are doing more harm than good.
Yonder pouches were designed to keep phones in a secure lock mechanism during class to minimize distractions. However, the execution has been far from perfect. Instead of fostering a better learning environment, these pouches have created significant inconvenience and frustration among students. Imagine needing to use your phone for an emergency, only to be hindered by a sealed pouch that takes precious minutes to unlock with a teacher's assistance. This is not just about minor annoyances; it's about safety and accessibility when students need it the most.
Moreover, these pouches haven't effectively reduced distractions. Many students find ways to circumvent the system, rendering the pouches pointless and the policy ineffective. Rather than focusing on punitive measures, we should be encouraging responsible use of technology. Educational institutions like ours should implement programs that teach students about technology balance and responsibility, rather than restricting it.
It's crucial to address the mental health implications these pouches may have. Being unable to access phones during school hours can exacerbate anxiety for some and heighten stress levels, especially for students who need to stay connected for personal reasons.
The solution lies in fostering open communication between students, parents, and school administrators to find more effective and less intrusive methods to manage mobile phone use. Encouraging workshops that educate students on how to manage screen time effectively can be far more beneficial than enforcing restrictive policies.
Please sign this petition to urge the administration of College Park High School to reconsider the use of Yonder pouches and work with the school community to develop a more balanced approach to technology use during school hours in Pleasant Hill, CA. Your support can make our school a more understanding and accommodating learning environment for everyone.
