Animal welfare is deeply personal to me, and I believe it should never be taxed. Our pets provide us with unconditional love and companionship, and they rely on us to meet their basic needs. However, as the cost of living continues to rise, essential pet care services like boarding, grooming, and veterinary treatment are becoming increasingly unaffordable for many pet owners across the UK. When the cost of these necessary services is subject to VAT, it places an undue financial burden on families, and in turn, it negatively impacts the wellbeing of countless animals.

Currently, essential pet care services are subject to a 20% VAT, which significantly inflates the costs of maintaining an animal's health and wellbeing. For many families, this added expense means having to make difficult decisions about the level of care their pets receive. This harsh reality can lead to delayed veterinary visits, compromised welfare, and, heartbreakingly, abandonment or neglect of beloved pets.

Removing VAT from essential pet care would not only alleviate the financial strain on pet owners, but also ensure that all pets have access to the care they deserve. By doing so, we can prevent unnecessary suffering and promote a culture of responsible pet ownership across the nation.

Studies have shown that pet ownership can improve mental health, reduce stress, and even lower blood pressure. When pets thrive, so do their owners. Therefore, it's in our society's best interest to ensure that essential pet care is accessible and affordable.

We call on the UK Government to take immediate action to amend the current tax laws and remove VAT from essential pet care services. By making these necessary changes, we can safeguard the welfare of our beloved pets and uphold our commitment to their care.
