The Issue

Imagine living in a community where every move you make is being tracked, not because you've committed a crime, but just because you're going about your daily life. This is the reality facing residents of Hilton Head Island, an area renowned for its natural beauty and tranquility. The installation of Flock Cameras in our community has turned this idyllic location into a surveillance state, infringing upon the rights and privacy of every law-abiding citizen.

Flock Cameras are designed to capture data from every vehicle that passes by, storing detailed information that includes license plates, vehicle descriptions, and even the time and direction of travel. This constant surveillance feels invasive and unwarranted, transforming our community into a place where we are monitored like criminals because we are simply living our lives.

According to a 2021 report in the New York Times, the implementation of these surveillance systems in residential areas has shown little evidence of their effectiveness in reducing crime rates. Instead, they contribute to an increased sense of insecurity and a chilling effect on personal freedoms.

Benjamin Franklin famously said, "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." These words resonate deeply now, as we find ourselves forced to choose between the comfort of our privacy and the arguable benefits of increased surveillance.

We understand the need for effective law enforcement. However, the pursuit of this must not come at the cost of essential liberties. There are more balanced approaches that can ensure both safety and privacy such as community policing, improving street lighting, and engaging local communities in crime prevention efforts.

We demand accountability and transparency from those in positions of power who have endorsed this surveillance technology. We urge local authorities to reassess the implementation of Flock Cameras and explore alternatives that respect the privacy and rights of Hilton Head residents while still maintaining public safety.

This issue is not just about technology; it's about preserving our fundamental rights and the character of our beloved community. We owe it to ourselves and future generations to act now.

Please join us in urging local officials to remove these unlawful Flock Cameras from Hilton Head Island. Sign this petition to stand up for our right to live freely and without unwarranted surveillance. Together, we can protect our privacy and our community values.
