Remove unethical Faculty Affairs staff at CSUN
The Issue
I am Christian Parra-Ramirez, a Deaf Studies major here at CSUN. I used to work for the Office of Faculty Affairs as a student assistant where I was privy to many sensitive conversations due to it being a space in an 'open' floor plan. As you know, they handle grievances - but Michelle Kilmnick as the Director of that Department violated the integrity and confidentiality of these investigations by essentially gossiping about everyones' personal issues for her own entertainment and drama throughout the entirety of my employment there with the rest of the staff in the Office. Additionally - to sum up my goal with this email, I just want to let you know that she is not to be trusted with your sensitive life issues.
Furthermore, I have submitted workplace complaints with Human Resources - but have ultimately been told that there is absolutely no wrongdoing on their end along with ZERO protections for student assistants on campus. If that is the case, then I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem for me to share my TRUE and HONEST experiences as a student employee there with the rest of the faculty here in the CSUN community. My undergraduate journey has been a rough one and I have grown to adore my Professors. They deserve to know the type of person she is, and so do you.
In a similar manner, I was also let go quite suddenly from the Office of Faculty Affairs with absolutely no advanced notice nor a written one. It was an abrupt phone call. I know I was hired because I was a Gay Guatemalan man with a knack for languages (revealed during my initial interviews with them) and had trained two new student assistants just a few weeks before they ended my employment there. Why was I told they were letting me go due to a lack of budget room/hours, yet they were then actively hiring...? Why would they let a student assistant who allegedly couldn't follow directions (nor apparently pay any attention to detail) train two new hires who were basically his replacement? Why would they continue to have kept a student assistant on board for a length of time that was (in my opinion) spanning close to two years, when this assistant allegedly would disappear from the office for long periods of time, and leave early along with arriving late? They claim to be very strict about timekeeping and the accuracy of reporting ones' working hours after accusing me of inaccurately reporting my own timesheet. If that is the case, why were they generous enough to pay this terrible student assistant for ALL of the scheduled time they typically worked even if they actually didn't happen to? Doesn't that contradict the oh-so-strict attitude they claim to have?
A majority of the time when I was in the office, most of the staff worked remotely. If they always had to check in with me to follow up on incomplete/mishandled tasks - why don't I have anything in writing myself that describes this to have been the case? We would have had to have communicated through manners such as Jabber, email, text, Teams or Slack...and again, I have no record of them attempting to reach out to me. Are they able to support their claim with the written forms of communication they say they had?
They claimed that I was let go due to poor performance, However, they also claimed I was not rehired because of my lack of availability. If that were the case...why did they keep another student assistant on board who had even LESSER time to work in the office due to an even TIGHTER schedule? Wouldn't they be contradicting themselves here?
It's downright difficult and near impossible to prove that I was let go as a result of discrimination. I am, however, confident in the fact that I am able to disprove every other reason they've provided as to why I was not re-appointed in the very first place.
This is not slander. These are all facts. If need be, I am willing to take any form of polygraph test to credit my words. Are they able to say the same?
Along with all of this, it also struck me as odd that I could not land a job once again as a student assistant here on campus until after over a dozen interviews right after filing a workplace complaint. This tidbit of information doesn't prove anything, though. Every other Department I've worked for has provided me with a written notice well in advance except for Faculty Affairs when it came to unfortunately being let go - can HR say there truly was no wrongdoing?
They made me question my worth as a human being. I met with mental health professionals here at CSUN and was prescribed a large dose of antidepressants after a lengthy period of time following multiple sessions. I have proven emotional damages because of what's occurred.
Lastly, I have been told by Human Resources that they cannot and would not retaliate against me or my enrollment here at CSUN due to filing this workplace complaint. Also, they let me know they cannot stop me from (hopefully) working as a sign language interpreter on campus due to the high Deaf population I want to provide access for. This means I can exercise my Right to Free Speech as a student here at CSUN in order to let everyone know the nature of their decorum.
From a corporate standpoint, they're willing to do anything to protect themselves. As a young person and member of our community, so am I. You deserve a Director in that Department who does not take your vulnerability for granted.
While I find it downright NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE to prove I was fired because of my sexual orientation, I have been able to DISPROVE every other reason Faculty Affairs provided HR. The more holes I poke in their narrative, the GREATER the lack of a response they give me.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
