The Issue

As the students representing the band programs of School District 5 of Lexington and Richland Counties, we want to advocate for ourselves. Under the "leadership" of Tyrell James, the Irmo Band program, which was once a beacon of pride and tradition has drastically declined in both morale and education. For years, this program has been a source of community and achievement for students, parents, and alumni alike. Sadly, the environment that has been recently fostered by Tyrell James betrays their legacy, leaving a lasting negative impact on their experiences.

Mr. James's tenure has been marked by unprofessional conduct and a malignant approach to student development. His consistent habit of talking down to/on students diminishes their passion for music and performance. The atmosphere within the program has transformed from one of respect and growth to a toxic environment centered around favoritism and a lack of transparency.

We, the students representing this program demand a leader who can encourage, support, and truly educate students on their musical endeavors. However, many from the program feel unsupported and undervalued under the current leadership. They deserve a director who recognizes and nurtures talent without bias, and someone who can uphold the traditions and excellence of the program while also implementing new methods to continue its success.

This movement is not only for us, the current students, but also for future generations who deserve to experience the unrelenting joy and camaraderie of being a part of the Irmo Band program. We have witnessed first-hand the decline of a program that means so much to us. We DEMAND that school administrators and district decision-makers listen to the voices of those who are being directly impacted; this being the students, parents, staff, and even alumni, and initiate the process to replace Tyrell James with a director who embodies the values and aspirations of this cherished program.

Please help us in protecting the future of the Irmo Band program by signing this petition to demand change and restore integrity, transparency, and passion to our beloved band. Together, we can ensure that the program will flourish and thrive like it once did.
