Remove Tulip Siddiq as MP Following Her Corruption Conviction and Call a By-Election
Remove Tulip Siddiq as MP Following Her Corruption Conviction and Call a By-Election
The Issue
Trust in British politics is collapsing. At a time when the public expects higher standards from those in public life, voters were stunned to learn that MP Tulip Siddiq has been convicted of corruption in Bangladesh, as widely reported by major UK and international news outlets.
Whatever someone’s political views, one principle is clear:
An MP convicted of corruption anywhere in the world cannot continue representing the British public.
In any other profession, a corruption conviction would result in immediate suspension or removal. Yet in Parliament, due to a loophole in the Recall of MPs Act, a foreign conviction does not trigger the recall process, meaning constituents currently have no formal mechanism to remove her.
This is unacceptable.
Why this matters
- The integrity of Parliament depends on MPs being above reproach
- A corruption conviction anywhere undermines public confidence
- Bangladesh would not risk the diplomatic fallout of convicting someone closely connected to the UK Prime Minister unless the evidence was compelling
- Constituents deserve an MP whose reputation is not compromised on the global stage
This is not about party politics.
This is about the basic standards we expect from anyone holding public office in the UK.
We call for the following:
- Tulip Siddiq must be removed from her position as MP for Hampstead and Highgate
- A by-election must be called immediately so voters can choose a new representative
- Parliament must not allow a corruption-convicted MP to continue in office simply because the offence was overseas
If Parliament is serious about integrity, transparency, and accountability, it cannot ignore a conviction of this nature.
A by-election is the only democratic, fair, and credible outcome.
Please sign this petition to demand that Tulip Siddiq be removed as MP and that voters in Hampstead and Highgate are given the chance to choose a new representative.
