We’re over 2,600 signatures now and the media continues to get in touch with us and our friends from Deakin University asking for comments and interviews. This article is from the Surf Coast Times last Friday.
For many, the problems raised by this surf cam are;
- Bells and Winki Pop are already under enough pressure from development and crowds,
- The surf cam is not needed,
- No one has asked for it, and
- If it were to be taken down, it would not prevent anyone from surfing Winki or Bells as there are plenty of other ways of checking the conditions including weather and surf reports that give wind, swell and tide information, animated surf model forecasts and other nearby surf cams.
We don’t believe the management philosophy of Respect and Protect’ the Bells surfing reserve, the core values of surfing and the way the broader community enjoy the coast should be undermined for the convenience of those who use the surf cam and for the commercial gain of an interstate private company.
The Bells Beach Surfing Recreation Reserve is the world’s first surfing reserve, it has state and federal heritage listings and a lot of work has been done by the local community to keep it relatively free of development.
Thank you to all of you for signing this petition and if you would like to help keep this Australian surfing icon free of further commodification, we would be very appreciative if you could share the petition and consider promoting it so it can be seen by a wider audience.
Thank you.
