Remove the USA as a permanent member of the UN
The Issue
In today's world, the United Nations stands as a beacon of hope, a collective voice advocating for peace, security, and human rights. Yet, there are times when the very foundation of this esteemed body is challenged by the actions of its members. I find myself deeply concerned about the United States' continued status as a permanent member of the United Nations, particularly after the recent speech delivered by President Donald Trump at the General Assembly.
The United Nations was established to counteract behaviors and ideologies reminiscent of fascism that erupted so destructively during the first half of the 20th century. In his speech, Trump presented rhetoric that not only opposed the core values of harmony and cooperation but bordered on undermining the purpose of the UN itself. This is more than a divergence in political opinion; it is a direct threat to the sovereignty of international law maintained by both the UN and institutions such as the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Moreover, the USA's consistent call for the disbandment of the United Nations and the ICC poses a fundamental tension between their membership and the organization's mission. By questioning the integrity and existence of these organizations, the USA has portrayed a lack of commitment to multilateral diplomacy and global justice.
Statistics reveal that the USA has often vetoed resolutions that align with global consensus, impacting worldwide humanitarian efforts and peacekeeping missions. For instance, veto counts from reputable sources show that the USA has exercised its veto 79 times since 1946, often in cases related to Middle East peace processes and civilian protection.
By allowing the USA to remain a permanent member of the Security Council, we are giving a platform to a nation that, at least under its recent leadership, does not consistently uphold the UN's foundational principles. To protect the integrity of the United Nations and ensure it remains a force for good, it is imperative to reevaluate the United States' status as a permanent member.
This petition calls for the United Nations to take a stand and uphold its values, reinforcing its commitment to fostering peace and equality globally. Let us come together as a global community to urge the United Nations to reconsider the USA's permanent membership status, ensuring it aligns with the principles we all hold dear.
Sign this petition to support our call for a more just and representative international community that truly reflects the values of peace, justice, and shared human dignity.
