Email sent to West Berkshire Traffic and Road Safety team on the 30th July 2025.
Good morning,
I am writing to express my appreciation for the recent removal of the speed bumps on Kiln Road and to seek urgent clarification on whether this change will be permanent.
Prior to their removal, the speed bumps caused significant disruption for myself and many of my neighbours. Each time larger vehicles; including buses, agricultural machinery, and industrial estate traffic passed over them, our homes would shake noticeably. This was not only extremely unsettling but also raised concerns about potential structural impact on our properties. The disturbance regularly interrupted sleep and daily living, affecting our health and wellbeing.
Since the bumps were removed, the improvement has been immediate and substantial. For the first time in months, I and others in the community have been able to sleep soundly, and several neighbours have echoed the same relief.
Given the scale of the impact these bumps have had on residents, I must request confirmation that they will not be reinstated. If there are plans to reinstall them, I wish to formally lodge my objection and ask that you provide the details of the appropriate appeal process without delay.
I want to stress that we fully support road safety and the need to control vehicle speeds on Kiln Road. However, it is clear that the use of speed bumps in this location is not an appropriate solution due to the severe and unacceptable impact on adjacent homes. I strongly urge the council to instead consider alternative measures such as vehicle‑activated speed signs, chicanes, road narrowing, or speed cameras — all of which can calm traffic effectively without causing damage or disturbance to residents.
I would appreciate a prompt response to confirm the long‑term position regarding these speed bumps.
Kind Regards,
Rebecca Hoibak
