I am writing to bring attention to an unnecessary and inconvenient change made to the traffic lights at the intersection of Derry Rd West and John Watt Blvd. The recent alteration introduced a left turn red light for vehicles heading westbound and turning left into John Watt Blvd. This modification, quite frankly, serves no purpose and has disrupted the flow of traffic for hundreds of residents in our neighborhood.

Derry Rd West is not exceptionally busy, yet the imposition of a red light for left turns causes unnecessary delays, forcing residents and commuters alike to endure minutes of waiting for the next light cycle. Many of us use this route daily, and the previous setup with a left turn advanced green light was efficient and adequately served the community's needs.  The region of Peel argues there is a sightline visibility issue to see the oncoming traffic.  Also there has been 1 accident per year for the last 4 years because of this.

Traffic congestion is a significant concern for many cities, including ours, and while efforts must be made to improve safety and flow, this particular change seems counterproductive. According to traffic studies, intersections with high traffic volumes may benefit from designated left turn phases. However, such measures should not be implemented where they create more hindrances than benefits.

A well-designed intersection considers both safety and efficiency. Hence, we petition the local traffic authority to re-evaluate this intersection and revert to the advanced green light system for left turns. This adjustment would alleviate the undue delays currently experienced, enhance traffic flow, and better accommodate our community's needs, as well as stop the new habit of making U-turns and turning on the red light anyway, both of which are more dangerous than the light was before.
