The Issue

Since the signing of Section 24220 of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act in November 2021, I've been deeply concerned about the government's growing reach into the personal lives of Americans. This "kill switch law" mandates the inclusion of "advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology" in all new passenger vehicles. While safety is paramount, this feels like unwanted government intrusion, pandering to a 'Big Brother' mentality that seeks to control the actions of free citizens of the United States.

The prospect of having a government-mandated kill switch embedded in our vehicles raises numerous freedom and privacy concerns. The idea that a centralized authority, regardless of their intent, could remotely disable a privately-owned vehicle disrupts the liberties that form the foundational principles of our nation. We have historically valued our independence and the right to make personal choices without excessive regulation.

Moreover, implementing such a mandate could set a dangerous precedent, leading to further intrusions into not just our vehicles, but potentially our homes and personal lives. A law born out of safety intent might very well cascade into broader surveillance, thus creating a state where individuals feel perpetually monitored and constrained, starkly opposing the very idea of freedom many Americans hold dear.

There's also a practical consideration regarding the implementation of this technology. The creation, testing, and deployment of such systems could skyrocket costs for automakers, leading to increased vehicle prices for consumers. This further emphasizes the economic impact on the average American, who may find themselves paying higher prices for vehicles endowed with technology they neither want nor trust.

In opposing Section 24220, we seek to maintain our rights to vehicle autonomy, to resist the advancement of unnecessary surveillance, and to safeguard the personal freedoms that the United States has long stood for. Let's join together in urging lawmakers to rethink this legislation and find a balance that intersects safety with freedom without compromising personal privacy.

Please sign this petition to remove the "kill switch law" from federal legislation. Let’s ensure that the government respects our privacy, autonomy, and the foundational belief in freedom and independence. Together, we can make our voices heard and demand that safety doesn't equate to surveillance. Sign now and stand up for our rights.
