Remove the Divisiveness: Take the "Let Us Alone" Motto Off Florida Driver’s Licenses
The Issue
To the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) and the Florida State Legislature,
We, the residents of Florida, are calling for the immediate removal of the motto "Let Us Alone" from our state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. A driver’s license is a universal document that every resident relies on daily, and it should reflect a modern, inclusive Florida that welcomes all people—not a divisive message rooted in a painful past.
While some attempt to frame "Let Us Alone" as a simple statement of personal privacy or individual liberty, we cannot ignore its true historical context. This phrase dates back to 1845, an era when Florida’s political identity was explicitly tied to the preservation of slavery and white supremacy. To many Floridians, reviving this 19th-century slogan serves as a painful reminder of a time when the state fought to deny basic human rights and freedom to Black Americans.
Our official state identification should not be used as a billboard for controversial, historically loaded political slogans. Floridians deserve a standard, neutral ID card that represents our diverse communities without forcing drivers to carry a message that many find offensive and alienating.
We urge our state lawmakers and the FLHSMV to retract this design update and ensure our state documents unite us rather than divide us.
Please sign this petition to show that Floridians want a forward-looking state that respects all of its citizens.
