The Issue

As a proud Irish woman, the derogatory words used by the current Derry Mayor are not only insulting to me but to the entire constituency she is obligated to represent. Labeling us as "terrorists" and refusing to apologise for her careless words, undermines the importance of fairness and respect in an office as dignified as that of the Mayor.

The term "terrorism" implies severe violence and unrest, something which is not, and should not, be associated with peaceful citizens of Derry. This incident tarnishes the politics of our city which was once lauded for its peaceful transformation after periods of tumultuous history.

Comments like the Mayor's exacerbate rather than ameliorate tensions, painting a negative picture of Derry's peoples who contribute positively to society and bristle at such mischaracterizations.

The refusal to sincerely apologize adds further to the brashness of this act despite various opportunities to do so. Any political party that displays such disrespect to their constituents should be held accountable; being a representative does not place one above criticisms or repercussions. In the interest of fairness, we propose that the Deputy Mayor, known for their empathetic understanding of the people's sentiment and policies, steps up as the city's new representative.

This petition is an earnest plea to us Derry citizens, to band together and lend our voices towards the removal of the current Mayor, fostering respect and understanding in our city's leadership. Please sign this petition to help make this change happen.
