The Issue

At Maywood Middle School in the Issaquah School District, Washington, a significant issue has arisen due to the enforcement of a backpack ban. This policy makes it exceptionally hard for students to carry their belongings, forcing them to go to their lockers between every class. The inconvenience doesn’t just add time and stress to students' already busy schedules, but also detracts from valuable class time. It is crucial that we address this policy to avoid unnecessary struggles that hinder our children's educational experience.

Students need to carry various materials to succeed academically — from textbooks and notebooks to supplies for arts and science classes, not to mention personal items like lunchboxes and water bottles. The backpack ban imposes an unfair burden particularly on those who have limited time between classes. It results in students carrying books and supplies in their hands, which is not only cumbersome but also risky as it increases the likelihood of losing or damaging personal and school property.

Moreover, this policy does not take into account students with specific needs, such as those who require medical supplies, additional resources for disabilities, or simply have more to carry due to placement in various tiered learning programs. These students especially need the convenience of backpacks to ensure they have everything necessary to thrive in their educational setting.

Research shows that ergonomic carrying of school supplies can prevent injuries and improve organization among students. Therefore, continuing the backpack ban is not a sustainable or beneficial solution to any potential problems the policy aims to mitigate, such as crowding or security concerns. Many schools have successfully managed these issues through alternative means, such as having clear backpacks or other safety measures without prohibiting backpacks altogether.

We urge the Issaquah School District to reconsider this policy immediately. By abolishing the backpack ban, the school can once again support a more equitable and efficient environment for education. Sign this petition to stand with the students of Maywood Middle School in advocating for the reintroduction of backpacks to help them achieve their full potential without unnecessary barriers.
