Remove the 3/5ths Clause from the Constitution
The Issue
For too long, our society has been shackled by the remnants of an oppressive past. As a person who has witnessed the pervasive impact of racism, I am compelled to call for the removal of the 3/5ths clause from the constitution. This clause, once a grim reflection of an era marred by racial injustice and inhumanity, remains an ever-present reminder of the institutionalized racism that continues to stain our nation's history.
The 3/5ths clause was originally included in the United States Constitution as a compromise between Northern and Southern states. It quantified an enslaved person as three-fifths of a free person for the purposes of state population counts and electoral representation. Although the clause was rendered obsolete by the 13th Amendment, it is symbolic—a stain that should be erased to truly honor the equality and humanity of every individual, irrespective of race.
By removing this clause, we acknowledge the wrongs of our past while taking a definitive step towards healing and unity. We reassert our commitment to eradicating systemic racism and fostering a society rooted in equality and mutual respect.
Let's make this change for future generations who deserve to live in a world free from the echoes of their ancestors' oppressions. It is time to update our constitution to reflect our true values as a nation that believes in the dignity and worth of all its citizens.
Join me in petitioning the government to take action. Sign this petition and be a part of a movement that aims to break away from the chains of historical racism and build a more equitable future for everyone.
